The total number of smart home devices supported by voice assistants increased to almost 90,400 as of May 2019. Amazon Alexa is the platform that is supported by the highest number of devices, with recent estimates reaching as high as 60,000 supported devices.

Alexa has proven to be a capable smart assistant, with its strongest performance in answering information-related questions. Over time, Alexa's inventory of skills has increased to over 100,000. Some Alexa skills enable the connection to other smart home devices, from smart lights to televisions and many other items. Most of these skills are based in the United States – over 65,900 skills as of September 2019 are accessible within the United States.

The use of virtual assistants

Virtual digital assistants are software programs that take natural language commands or questions, either in written or spoken form, and attempt to carry out a task or provide an answer for the user. Having more convenience in daily life is what most respondents surveyed valued in using smart assistants. It is estimated that through 2022, the majority of the smart assistant compatible devices are home automation and lighting devices.
